![]() By turns tragic and laugh out loud funny, it remains the best work either Dini or Timm has produced for comics since, and alone it’s five star quality. ![]() It could perhaps be seen as the flip side to Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s psychological examination of what created the Joker in The Killing Joke.įor a tale dealing with such complex emotional responses it’s very minimally told, yet detail packed, and creating a character with a far greater depth than had been seen in the animated series. Although drawn by Timm in the animated cartoon style, this is quite the dark descent, dealing with what’s the equivalent of an abusive relationship, yet treading a fine line that manges to mine comedy from the situation. ![]() The title story may not be Harley Quinn’s first appearance in comics, pre-dated by a story in Batman Adventures volume two, but it lays out her background, showing how ambitious psychiatrist Harleen Quinzel became obsessed with the Joker. ![]() Unless you’re a completist or Mrs Timm, the version to look out is Mad Love and Other Stories, the other stories being further work produced by Paul Dini and Timm in the Batman Adventures style during the mid-1990s. The only comic within is the ‘Mad Love’ story, which is delivered three times, once as the complete tale, once as Bruce Timm’s layout sketches and once as colour guides. There are two different versions of this book, and not everyone has been happy after buying the deluxe hardback edition. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() The daughter of a middle-grade civil servant, James grew up in the university town of Cambridge. James, byname of Phyllis Dorothy James White, Baroness James of Holland Park, (born August 3, 1920, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England-died November 27, 2014, Oxford), British mystery novelist best known for her fictional detective Adam Dalgliesh of Scotland Yard. James's legions of fans and anyone who enjoys the pleasures of a masterfully wrought whodunit. Each of these stories is as playful as it is ingeniously plotted, the author's sly humor as evident as her hallmark narrative elegance and shrewd understanding of some of the most complex-not to say the most damning-aspects of human nature. ![]() ![]() Dalgliesh's godfather implores him to reinvestigate a notorious murder that might ease the godfather's mind about an inheritance, but which will reveal a truth that even the supremely upstanding Adam Dalgliesh will keep to himself. A best-selling crime novelist describes the crime she herself was involved in fifty years earlier. A "pedantic, respectable, censorious" clerk's secret taste for pornography is only the first reason he finds for not coming forward as a witness to a murder. Dalgliesh is drawn into a case that is "pure Agatha Christie.". Four previously uncollected stories from one of the great mystery writers of our time-swift, cunning murder mysteries (two of which feature the young Adam Dalgliesh) that together, to borrow the author's own word, add up to a delightful "entertainment." ![]() ![]() ![]()
![]() ![]() Beautiful Disaster (BD) is how the outside world sees Travis Maddox.very tough, brutally honest and a "Maddog" right. just broken.! OMG! Who writes like that.? McGuire I will read anything you write! Third. it was like Travis was raging on the outside. OMG! SO much better now that I have see it from Travis POV. I was so wanting to hear the other side of the virgin/smex/leaving scene. McGuire apparently felt that way too, because not one of those scenes where redone. I was scared some scenes from BD would be redone from Travis POV, which I felt were already done from his POV in BD. I was so nervous about this book b/c I didn't want my original impression of Travis Maddox to change, not one bit. ![]() better than the first from another POV.!!! This is really hard to do and McGuire nailed it. OMGOOODNESS! How do you write the exact same story. ![]() ![]() He is easily relatable, even (or especially) when he’s being obnoxious to his doctors and his fellow patience. Jeff’s character was truly done brilliantly. It’s not unusual at all and that’s what makes it so special. It’s just a story about a boy that could easily be your next door neighbor or your second cousin. There are no heroes, no villains, no Big Drama whatsoever. ![]() This diary-like narrative is one of the most honest things I’ve ever read. ![]() Jeff’s story is heartwarming and poignant, but it’s also simple and laugh-out-loud funny. According to him, his parents and the doctor made a mistake and he shouldn’t be locked up with the crazies. He absolutely refuses to acknowledge that he has a problem and he is determined not to talk about his reasons for cutting his wrists open. Jeff handles his situation with lots of denial wrapped in good humor. ![]() ![]() Finding their son almost bloodless in a bathtub isn’t something they particularly want to relive, and if the psych ward is what it takes to keep him alive, that’s where he’ll stay for as long as it takes. He doesn’t want to and he’s determined not to cooperate, but his stay isn’t optional and his parents refuse to take him home. After an attempted suicide, Jeff wakes up in a psychiatric ward where he is forced to spend the next 45 days. ![]() ![]() ![]() The only difference is the person it resides inside.” It either makes you a warrior or a coward. (Yes, I know my bitterness is shining through lol) Making the abrupt ends all that more upsetting. Each next book picks up directly where the last one ends. In some ways it feels almost like the end of a tv series and that second to last episode, edge of your seat and infuriating. Instead, she gets married, has a child, faces her husband’s infidelity, and struggles to find time to write the second book everyone keeps pestering her to do.
